about

This EP was produced and recorded by Paul Verna at Vernacular Studios in Tenafly, NJ in 1996. Up until that point our recordings had been issued on home produced cassettes of which very few remain. Releasing a CD back then seemed like a big deal. We printed 1000 and I still have a couple of boxes left.

We were committed to a DIY approach and aesthetic with a cynical attitude towards the record industry. We knew someone in a band - highly regarded to this day - that had a gold record but still owed their label money when they were dropped.

We performed regularly in the East Village and the Lower East Side - mainly at the Sidewalk on Avenue A but also at Arlene’s Grocery and the Ludlow St Cafe. I lived in Williamsburg but there very few places to play out there out there back then. We performed a few times at a bar near the water called The Right Bank and many times at Gallagher's Pub on the Northside. But our most frequent and absolute favorite venue was a place in Red Hook called Sunny’s Bar. The owner, Sunny Balzano, loved us and was very expressive in conveying that sentiment. We would normally get going around 10 pm and play until four in the morning.

In February 1997 my daughter Ilona was born and we gradually dropped out of the scene. When Ilona was in preschool I convinced Mr Clarke that we should be performing for a much younger crowd and shift our focus to creating music that kids and parents could enjoy together. And that’s what we did.
